The Crossing: Moments Like These
Fifth + Pine, Downtown Seattle

I had literally a few moments to grab this shot from my car before the light changed. One chance at this great scene with the man who looks like Father Guido Sarducci / Frank Zappa, looking straight at me, holding a leash with a Great Dane who had what looked like a license plate around his neck that said FLASH ME on it. And everyone else, they’re all standing just so. I couldn’t have arranged them better. So this is the shot. It’s far from perfect: it’s out of focus, it’s blurry, it’s shot through a very (sorry to say) dirty side car window. And I had the Sigma 10-20mm lens on (which I had only recently bought and was getting the hang of at the time) and, you know, everyone’s popping out of the bokeh in kind of an odd way, but I love it. And the sky — the sky is all blown out behind them because we had a little cloud cover that afternoon. And so, all that said, I’m writing all this because I *love* this shot despite all its faults for one plain and simple reason. It proves to me just how much I love this medium we call photography: it’s moments like these that make me so glad I carry a camera.
